Halloween Pirate Costumes Madness
What is this madness about dressing up as someone else on Halloween? Well, it is the one time of year when inhibitions don’t count for much and you can even be a pirate just by choosing the right outfit and hat. For the past 10 years, pirate Halloween costumes have reigned and show no real signs of slowing. Let’s take a look at a couple of ideas.
The pirate costume – How authentic do you want to be?
If you want to dress up as a pirate, fine. Just put in some effort. That said, if you do want to dress up, make sure that you do not go overboard either. One symptom you might be over-committing to your costume is if you start growing out your facial hair months ahead to get an authentic-looking goatee, complete with beads. That is a little much.
Jack Sparrow – a cool pirate costume for Halloween
There are two very popular pirates today, and they are both fictional. Those under eight probably know who Captain Feathersword is from the popular kid’s show The Wiggles.
Those over that age probably know more about Jack Sparrow from the Pirates of the Caribbean movies. Their pirate costumes are nothing alike, and the image they portray is very different as well.
There is something about pirates that captivates the imagination – even though the origins of these folks is very questionable as best. So, if you want something fun to wear to your masquerade party or the Halloween contest in your area then you might consider pirate costumes for starters. Have a great time!

Tips for Wearing Book Character Costumes
It’s coming quickly. The pressure of Halloween is on. Or, maybe you just have a special masquerade ball you are attending soon. Here are some quick tips for wearing book character costumes that will have heads turning when you walk in.
Creative Book Character Costumes For Halloween
You may be tired of going out for Halloween dressed as the common ghost, witch, or mummy. Instead of going with what you find in the stores, you can go out and get what you need to make up your own totally unique costume that no one else will be wearing.
They may have made the same costume but yours is going to be different than theirs because you made yours on your own. One great place to find ideas, if you are low on inspiration, would be in some of your favorite books. Book character costumes can be a lot of fun and are going to stand out in the crowd as original.
Go back to be unique
If you want something that you are not going to see on many other people this Halloween, do not go for book character costumes that are popular right now. You can usually tell this by looking through the movies that have been out and popular in the last few years.
One example would be Harry Potter. Though you can come up with your own costume for this, these are being mass produced at the moment, making this a very common costume. If you like that character, that’s okay, just know you or your child will not be the only one wearing it.
Make sure they know the characters
When you choose book character costumes, you can choose what you want, but if you go with something obscure, you may find that no one knows who you are supposed to be and that you are going to have to explain your costume time and time again.
If you go with something that many have read, but is not out in a movie now or has been in the recent past, you may not have to explain too much. Scarlett O’Hara from Gone With the Wind is well known, but you may not run into too many people who have chosen it. You may not have to explain either, making it a great choice.
Making or buying your character outfit
There are a few things to keep in mind when constructing your costume. Some books that are classics have not been made into a movie. This means your interpretation of what that character looks like will be up to you and what you found in the book.
This type of book character costume will be a bit more difficult to make, but it will also be hard to be wrong. If something has been a movie, even if that movie was made a long time ago, there is already a predetermined look associated with that character. That is something to keep in mind.
Accessories and such
If you have chosen book character costumes that are out of the ordinary, you may have a hard time finding what you need to build your costume.
Shopping: buying or renting
You may want to go to a high end costume store for the bits and pieces that you need, or you can look online for the biggest variety of hard to find items that are going to be perfect for your book character costumes and accessories. At times, you may have to rent something, but that may be better than paying a lot of money for something you may never use again.
So, do your research. Be hapy with your outfit and get involved with book character costumes that will be memorable for you and the other guests at the party.
Whats a really good Halloween costume without a mask or a bulky costume?
Whats a good idea for a halloween costume without a mask or large bulky clothing? Keep in mind, I pushed this off until the last minute, so it should either be easy to make, or I should be able to purchase it somewhere (where its not sold out already). I’m a college boy, but its pretty freaken cold where I live, so I would prefer if the costume allowed me to be fully clothed. THanks for your help!
How would I make a raptor costume?
Yes, I need a raptor costume by the 4th of July [instead of halloween] for a parade I intend on participating in but I can’t find an adult size costume just kid sizes so I figure I will have to make my own. I do have a pattern of an adult size dinosaur costume dating from 1993 that will work for the majority of the body but it’s the raptor head I’m wondering about. My idea was to buy the kid size raptor costume and use the head and make the body match but I want to see if there is any easier way to do it other than that.
Here is a picture of the pattern,

Adult Disney Costumes for the Kid in You
Disney clothes? For adults? Who said that kids should have all the fun? Grown-ups like dressing up too and adult Disney costumes bring a lot of fun to the party.
These outfits are ideal for fancy dress parties or bachelor nights. Couples going to a social function can go in complementing outfits.
There is a wide range to choose from, from the classic movies of yesteryear to the more modern ones. Whatever your favorite character is, there is something for everyone for both men and ladies. With so much variety, it’s easy to put together a theme for any party.
Become a princess this Halloween
Ladies have a selection of beautiful outfits and they can live out their fantasies to be Snow White, Cinderella, Aurora or Ariel. They can also explore their dark side and be the Evil Queen, complete with a gown and cape, gold cord and sash and a gold crown.
One of the most villainous characters available in an adult size Disney costume is Cruella de Vil from 101 Dalmatians. Not a costume for dog lovers! The black velvet dress is sleeveless and there is a Dalmatian print cape and fake Dalmatian fur. There is also a black and white wig for the finishing touch.
But I wanna be a pirate!
Every schoolboy wants to be a pirate and the Pirates of Caribbean series of movies brought out the swashbuckler in us all. The hero is Jack Sparrow, with a cutlass in his hand and a glint in his eye. The Men’s Jack Sparrow adult costume from Disney looks like the real deal with the headgear, tunic, trousers, boots and belt.
Accessories are also available for the pirate, including a pistol, temporary eye tattoos, and simulated shrunken head and simulated chicken bones and foot suspended on a string. A pirate theme would go well with a house treasure hunt.
Timeless clothing
Peter Pan is another classic tale and the costume comes with a dark green tunic, green hat with a red feather, brown trousers, and a brown leather belt with a holder for a sword. Every Peter Pan needs his Tinker Bell, with a mint green costume and gossamer style wings.
Aladdin and Princess Jasmine, the Arabian Prince and Princess, also make the perfect couple. Aladdin has a silver jumpsuit, silver turban and purple cape. Prince Charming, the evergreen romantic hero has a costume with gold tassle braiding.
Tune up your falsetto voice
For a real look back at childhood, Minnie Mouse can make an entrance in a red polka dot skirt, white gloves and headband with trademark mouse ears. In contrast, there is the futuristic hero from the Toy Story movies, Buzz Lightyear.
This would be a good selection for an adult Disney costume at a science fiction party. Buzz the Space Ranger has a bodysuit, boot covers, wings (for falling with grace), and hood. He also has flashing buttons, a requirement for any self-respecting astronaut.
TV costumes
High School Musical is one of Disney’s recent successes and the High School Musical Glitter costume can be personalized with a message or a name, embroidered on to the outfit. The ideas are endless and so dress right in something that would make Walt Disney proud!
80s Costumes Shining the Disco Lights on You
For Halloween or other reasons, 80s costumes are “in” this year. Disco and Saturday Night Fever just never seem to slow down so now you can wear this retro clothing from the 1980 period with confidence.
If you were fashion conscious during the 1980′s, you can’t help but remember these ultra flamboyant 80′s costumes which drove the disco scene.
These costumes were definitely not for the shrinking violet type! Wearing one of the typical 80′s costumes required that you be willing to be noticed, wherever you might go. Fashionistas attending a disco vied with every other dancer to be the most outrageously dressed at the party.
Fans of retro clothes
While these elaborate outfits did not survive beyond the disco days, they are enjoying an encore with retro fashion fans everywhere. If you’re unfamiliar with the style, let’s take a look at the quintessential 80′s costume. It does make a statement at a party!
First, the hair. The obviously bleached blond look was one of the most desirable. Long was good, as were big and abundant curls. If you’re not into bleaching, you’ll need a wig to pull this look off with the proper panache. Other popular looks included color mixes, such as your regular brown hair on one side, with a shocking bright red on the other.
Large hats, decorated with feathers, large and brightly colored plastic flowers were also cool for some 80′s costume devotees.
Accessories
As for footwear, boots were large and in charge. Most often, knee highs were the boot of choice. The favored material was shiny, in-your-face patent leather.
As with every other component of the 80′s costume, colors ranged from bright to brighter to day-glo. There was no subtly in these colors. Primary colors were essential to the right look. Think canary yellow, hot pink and fire engine red.
To showcase the boots, contrasting colors of opaque stockings were a necessity. You’ve probably got a handle on the 80′s look by now.
Color schemes and ideas
Now for the dress. The colors were still brilliant, but this is where the costume acquired variety. This garment is where the costume became individualized. Rock star looks featured everything from Marilyn Monroe glamor to slinky fake lizard fabrics interspersed with a little metallic threading.
Outrageous ballerina-styled costumes, featuring a brilliantly colored bodice and nylon net mid-thigh – not mini – skirt also found favor with the 80′s costume crowd. Bell-bottom pants were also in vogue, with the bell being highly exaggerated. Mini dresses, with long bell bottom sleeves and gigantically patterned fabrics were yet another variation.
The cool 80s look
Men’s wear was sometimes a tad less outrageous. The dude who wanted to look cool might show up in a black dress shirt, sans tie and an over-sized sport jacket and slacks, in a neutral color.
This guy let the woman grab all the attention. Other men tried to out-do his woman’s costume, sporting a brilliant yellow, patent leather, zip-up suit with perhaps a bright red trim at neck and pant hem.
Now, if the 80′s costume look sounds like your next party garment or your Halloween apparel this year, all you need to do is go shopping online. With millions of results, you can surely find your red hot retro costume. Get down tonight!
Wear a Stunning 70s Costume this Halloween
The 1970 decade is one of the most remembered in history and now you can dress up for Halloween in style this year.
With Halloween fast approaching, many people are scrambling for a costume.
Selecting the right Halloween costume can be difficult; there are now more choices than every before and the simple act of going to one store and picking out a costume in fifteen minutes is a thing of the past. Lately, I have been thinking more and more about period costumes as a great choice to stand out this Halloween. Mostly, I am trying to find a great 70′s costume.
Benefits of period clothes
There are several reasons I like period costuming for Halloween. First of all, it definitely rides that thin line between obscurity and originality.
You can come up with something clever that people can still easily indentify and recognize without being obvious and lame. A 70′s costume would be no exception; even if people do not remember who exactly you are, they will usually be impressed with the original thought and attention to period detail.
When I think of a 70′s costume, I try to go beyond the obvious. It seems like every decade has one or two costumes that people immediately think of and the 70′s are no exception.
For the most part, the common 70′s costume is either a disco girl or a Superfly-esque pimp. These are all well and good, but they will not win you any points for new; they are costumes you see, maybe not everywhere, but once in a while.
Be a movie star (for a day at least)
A good period 70′s costume, then goes a little deeper. The place I like to start is celebrities. Who was famous in the 70′s? And did they have such a distinctive look that you can pull of. Most people think of Elvis as a 50′s celebrity, but he made a huge comeback in the 70′s with his Vegas-style costumes. Elvis is not the best example, but other celebrities had distinctive looks that can make a great 70′s costume.
Character clothing
Even better, perhaps than dressing as a celebrity, since few of them “stand out” in terms of an unmistakeable signature style, is dressing up as a famous character from the 70′s. This is my favorite option for a great 70′s costume if you can do it correctly. Personally, I think dressing up like Jack Nicholson’s character in Chinatown, complete with nose bandage would be a great choice.
However you approach your 70′s costume, I think it will be a great success. People love period costumes and if you make one that is uniquely yours, all the better. Take a little time to think outside the box and you will be sure to have a great 70′s costume. Happy Halloween!
50s Costume Shopping Ideas
No matter if it’s for Halloween or another special occassion, this shopping guide will take you through the wonderful world of the 50s costume and help you become hip.
Halloween is coming up again and if you are like me at all you know that searching for a Halloween costume is not at the top of your list.
Searching for a Halloween costume can be a tedious and time-consuming task that costs money for only a few hours of fun, one night out of the year.
But really, I wouldn’t mind the time and effort I put into finding a decent Halloween costume if only I could come up with a really great costume, something fun and original; sound like you? Well, here are some tips for a really unique approach to some excellent costumes: 50′s costume ideas.
1950 has a lot to offer in an outfit
The reason I like thinking about 50′s costume ideas so much is that it gives you a lot of options without a lot of other people dressing up as the same thing as someone else. Furthermore, a really good 50′s costume will not cost you an arm and a leg. As you will soon see, the idea of a 50′s costume as you buy at a store isn’t quite correct.
Back to nostalgia
First of all, the 50′s costume is not new. There has been clothing from the 1950s at shopping sites for a long time; the saddle-shoe wearing poodle skirt costume or the soda jerk or the greaser. In fact, I have found that it is rare indeed to go to a costume party around Halloween and not to see someone dressed in one of these famous 50′s costumes. However, I think that is precisely why I will be avoiding them.
Where to shop for fantasy clothes
If you don’t just want to wear a skirt and poodle socks, a phenomenal place to start, particularly for the 1950′s because the 1950′s ushered in a whole new wave of celebrity focus and adoration in the United States. Some popular 50′s icons include Elvis Presley, Frank Sinatra, Marilyn Monroe and James Dean. I think that working from there leads you to a really good 50′s costume.
Now, just wearing a celebrity mask is not necessarily enough. While dressing in period clothes helps to a point (and, perhaps enough for some), dressing up as a famous character like the celebrity you are most interested in might be the difference between a good 50′s costume and a great Halloween outfit.
Use your imagination for more dress ideas
Coming up with 50′s costume ideas is not hard; it takes a little bit of effort and some time, but it can also save you money and, most importantly, have one of the best costumes at your Halloween function. Get in tune, put on your “Happy Days” record, and have a ball!
Nev Mech halloween costume
This is Neville wearing his requested “Thanatos” mech costume made of cardboard and toilet paper rolls and spray paint. That’s several evenings of cutting, gluing and spray painting (*cough cough*) in the basement. He’s practicing walking before we head out to score candy. They were a huge hit and reasonably robust costumes, except Nev had a knee blow out requiring a repair crew with white glue and duct tape.
What is an easy Halloween costume using the stuff around the house?
I bought a costume for a party, then realized that it was to big on me. I cannot return it now, and all of the good costumes are taken in my size. What is a Halloween costume I can create using stuff around my house that is original/ creative, and not something that is very common?
